Ever since I spent a hefty $60 on a 40-ounce Stanley Tumbler, it’s become my travel companion this year. ( I have three by the way)
It is a commitment, but this bad boy keeps my coffee hot and iced water call for hours – no complaint here.
Thus, my Stanley was at the top of my packing list when I planned a trip to New York City. But ask myself this question could I bring it on the plane?
Yes, I could and you bit I did. According to the TSA website, a tumbler, whether it’s a Stanley or any other brand, MUST be empty when going through security.
TSA Rules On Tumblers
Note: This post about “Can you take a Stanley tumbler on a plane” is written according to TSA rules in the United States. Some countries may have different regulations, so if you’re flying in another country, these rules may not apply. We recommend you check with your airline or relevant authority for more information.
The good news is that you can bring your Stanley Tumbler with you on a plane. But as mentioned above, it must be empty while going through security.
Well, it makes sense because it is a place where people can hide illegal things.
It also aligns with the TSA’s 3-1-1 rule for carry-on liquids, which restricts containers holding liquids, gels, aerosols, creams, or pastes to 3.4 ounces (100ml) or less.
You can even carry your Stanley in your carry-on bag. But again, it must be empty before entering the security checkpoint.
However, just remember, security officers always have the final say on what can be brought on board.
Packing Your Stanley Cup In A Checked Bag
You can pack your Stanley Cup in a checked bag. There are no size restrictions on empty or full tumblers in checked luggage.
Just ensure that your bag still complies with your airline’s weight limits, and consider adding extra padding around your Stanley Cup for protection.
For an empty cup, I usually use packing cubes. These are small cubes for luggage organization that can isolate your tumbler and add a layer of protection.
I would not recommend packing a filled Stanley cup in a checked bag because you would not have access to it during the fight. Plus, it can leak out easily.
Can You Fill Your Stanley Tumbler at the Airport?
Yes, you absolutely can fill your Stanley Tumbler at the airport – but only after you’ve passed through security.
Most airports now have water bottle refill stations throughout the terminals, for travelers to fill their reusable bottles.
These stations often provide filtered water and may even have chilled options. {My favorite spot.}
Similarly, after passing security, you can always purchase bottled water or a beverage to fill your Stanley.
Is There a Stanley Tumbler Limit for Airplanes?
You can pack as many full or empty Stanley Tumblers in your checked luggage as you’d like, as long as the bag complies with the airline’s overall weight and size limitations.
Be practical! Remember that tumblers take up space in your bags. Focus on bringing the sizes of Stanley Tumblers you’ll use during your trip.
When traveling, I would pack on Stanley because they are huge and take up a lot of space.
My Go-to Tips For Traveling With Your Stanley Cup
- Empty is Key: Always bring your Stanley through security empty to follow TSA liquid rules.
- Refill Airside: Most airports have water bottle refill stations past security for fresh, cold water.
- Multi-Purpose: Use your Stanley for hot coffee, icy smoothies, or even as an in-flight snack holder.
- Clean on the Go: Pack travel-sized dish soap for quick rinses, or at least use water if a sink’s available.
- Pack Smartly: Wrap your Stanley in clothing in your suitcase for extra padding and protection.
Wrapping Up
Traveling with a Stanley Tumbler is not only allowed but a seriously smart move. Remember, your tumbler has to be empty to pass through security (TSA rules)
Airports have convenient refill stations, so you can enjoy refreshingly cold water or buy a hot coffee airside and fill up your Stanley.
Lastly, a quick rinse with travel soap or water will keep your Stanley fresh between uses on your trip.
